Developing Ideas in Writing - Creative, Literary Responses, Formal

When you ask students to develop their ideas or add details to their writing do they know what you mean?!  This resource includes three lists of specific strategies that students can work through to develop their ideas - one for creative writing, one for formal writing (which can also be used for literary essays), and one specifically to enhance thinking about texts to prepare for personal responses.  It is designed for students in Years 11 to 13, but can easily be adapted to suit further student levels or needs.

This resource includes:

Three lists of specific strategies to help students develop their ideas.

Activities (just a couple) for students to practice working methodically through their lists to see what they can use to improve their own writing/the given excerpt.

⭐ A few tips for teachers.

You and your students will enjoy:

❤️ Having a concrete tool/resource to call on to help with a skill that can feel complex and abstract for students.

❤️ Strategies that are easy to grasp and use.

❤️ Playing with language and critical thinking as a way to develop ideas.

❤️ Being able to tick strategies as students work through them - students can use this during the drafting and editing practice (formative/self assessment), or use them for peer assessment too.

❤️ A print-save version of the lists (both on one A4 page) to save you money!

Microsoft PowerPoint, resized to an A4 page.   This means your resource:

  • Is completely editable.
  • Will easily upload to your Google Drive if you prefer the Googley suite.
  • Can be printed or shared with students online.
