POETRY - TEACHING GUIDE - guide, student handouts, class slideshow
Have everything to hand with this guide to teaching poetry, suitable for any year level and adaptable (yes, of course it's completely editable!). It's aimed at:
- The beginning teacher, and
- The frazzled teacher who just wants somebody else to do the thinking for them for a minute.
While everything is in a logical order, you can just pick the bits out that you need, as you need them if you like.
(Note: This is not a poetry unit. Nor do we provide or analyse any modern or New Zealand poetry due to copyright constraints, sorry.)
This resource includes:
⭐ A 45-page teacher guide - A4 booklet - completely editable. (The student handouts are also included in this as are wee numbers on pages to show you the number of the corresponding slide in your class slideshow.)
⭐ Student handouts in a separate document (to make it easier just to print them all off or share them digitally).
⭐ Class slideshow - the basics of your poetry information and student handouts. A slideshow helps you explain things to your class we think!
We cover:
❤️ Plenty of teaching tips.
❤️ Poetic forms and poetic types.
❤️ Language - figurative language, sound devices, vocabulary
❤️ Imagery (and how it springs from techniques and contributes to mood and our understanding of tone)
❤️ Structure - meanings (the 'story', the conflict, links, contrast, change...), extended metaphor, lines and punctuation, sound (rhythm and rhyme scheme).
❤️ Annotation
❤️ Context - students complete a small investigation then move on to thinking about idea, purpose and audience.
❤️ Idea, purpose and audience
❤️ Thinking critically
❤️ Personal responses - just a touch
❤️ Fun ideas for WRITING poetry (nothing too serious, but some of our favs for years 9 and 10 really)

Sharing/Copying this Resource
Feel free to purchase just one for your department - no need for a copy for each teacher. However:
- Please do NOT share with the school down the road.
- Please do NOT take it with you to a new school.
- Feel free to suggest the website to others - that'd be great!
That's pretty fair I think! Let's help each other out. :)
