Close Reading Analysis Sequence for High School
If you're feeling wobbly about working through unfamiliar texts with your students - especially seniores, or if you just need a really solid resource, then this is for you. I first developed my literacy life-saver for planning my approach to texts, then later made these cards. I just didn't feel as though I was covering all I needed to for text analysis until I developed both resources. They're quite the crutch!
Print, cut and laminate, then sit sets of them in the middle of groups of students, or keep them on a shelf for students to run up and grab as they work through them. Steps include:
Pre-reading:
- Prior knowledge
- Topic predictions
- Genre predictions
- Upcoming vocabulary
Post-reading
- Clarify meaning
- Highlight (key points and examples)
- Visualise
- Summarise
- Cause and consequence
- Revise predictions
- Reading ON the lines
- Reading BETWEEN the lines
- Reading BEYOND the lines
- Asking, What if...?
- Purpose
- Audience
- Structure
- Language features
- Ideas
- Personal response
Blank cards are included if you want to add another / alternative steps. Also included is an accompanying slideshow which can be whipped up onto your big screen and typed into. You might need it for:
- extra instructions
- questions about the text you're reading (for on, between and beyond the lines cards)
- vocabulary you want students to find
- chalk and talk upon completion
These are also excellent because students can see and physically lay out the aspects we look at when studying an unfamiliar text. This is a tangible resource that will give both teachers and students confidence with close reading skills.
Enjoy!
Sharing/Copying this Resource
It'd be fabulous if you didn't share these with your colleages. :)
